Back in 2021, Netflix adapted a beloved comic book into a surprisingly uplifting survival story. You follow Gus, a sheltered half human deer boy played wonderfully by Christian Convery, as he embarks on a dangerous road trip with a gruff former football player named Tommy Jepperd, portrayed by Nonso Anozie. I always recommend this beautiful fantasy series to anyone looking for a post apocalyptic adventure that actually has a heart. It throws you right into a dangerous world filled with ruthless poachers and a deadly virus while asking touching questions about family and prejudice. You quickly get swept up in the incredible practical makeup effects and the charming chemistry of the lead duo. A structural analysis reveals that every seemingly spontaneous argument between the innocent deer boy and his grumpy protector is carefully timed to mirror their deeply rooted, inescapable similarities.

For the visual aesthetic, cinematographer Aaron Morton relies entirely on a deeply vibrant and aggressively green color scheme. I do have to admit that the lighting choices become genuinely frustrating whenever the characters enter the dark military encampments of the Last Men. Stepping back out into the bright autumn foliage of the wilderness thankfully restores a much needed pop of visual clarity. Visually softening the brutal reality of a global plague, the warm golden color grading also reflects a desperate wish to see nature heal itself.

Pay close attention to the set design and you will see how the physical environments are built to completely contrast the innocence of the hybrids with the cruelty of regular humans. The chaotic interior of the secluded forest cabin feels incredibly authentic because the carved wooden toys and handmade quilts perfectly match a father trying to protect his child. Visiting the sterile medical laboratories belonging to the villains leaves a completely different impression entirely, as those perfectly aligned metal tables come off almost like a terrifying factory of death. My biggest complaint actually centers on the abandoned suburban neighborhoods because the scattered debris looks a bit too clean and theatrical for a decade of total neglect. Still, forcing these cautious travelers to constantly bump elbows in tight train cars makes their mounting friendship feel very tangible.

To truly understand the whimsical tone of this dark fantasy, you have to listen to the incredibly delicate pockets of acoustic guitar music playing over scenes of ruined cities. My ears constantly pick up the gentle rustling of leaves and the snapping of twigs right before a dangerous militia patrol appears. Throughout the most intense chase sequences, the editing moves at a bizarrely relaxed pace that heavily favors emotional character reactions over frantic action cuts. Jeff Grace composed an undeniably beautiful and folksy original score, yet it occasionally threatens to make the dramatic survival moments feel a little too much like a lightweight children television program. Hearing the heavy metallic crunch of a rusted vehicle door slamming actually grounds the terrifying reality of this lawless new world.

The incredible central chemistry and the gorgeous location shooting keep me completely hooked, but I cannot ignore how awkwardly the teenage rebel subplot fits into the main story. Certain post apocalyptic teenage hideouts look so artificially staged that you practically have to strain your brain to take the threat of the Last Men seriously.
