The Mandalorian

I admit that I expected a merchandise driven cash grab from a tired franchise but Jon Favreau delivered a masterclass in virtual production. The Mandalorian is not a space opera. I found that it is a spaghetti western that utilizes cutting edge technology to reclaim the gritty soul of the original trilogy. My analysis suggests that the show works because it rejects the clean aesthetic of the prequels for a dirty and tactile reality where the helmets are battered and the droids are rusting.

The cinematography introduces a paradigm shift through the use of StageCraft technology. I analyzed the scenes shot within the LED volume and noticed that the environmental lighting on the reflective beskar armor is authentic rather than simulated. This visual aesthetics choice creates a seamless integration between the actor and the background which eliminates the green spill of traditional chroma key. I observed that the parallax of the digital environments moves in perfect synchronization with the camera which tricks the eye into believing in the physical existence of alien worlds.
