I always recommend this movie to my friends when they want a historical romance that actually feels like real life. A trip up to the massive Chatsworth House to represent Pemberley offers a totally different vibe entirely. The giant painted ceilings and endless statue galleries look like a beautiful but incredibly cold museum. My main complaint involves the pouring rain during the famous first proposal. The absolute downpour looks a bit too perfectly timed and theatrical for a movie that tries so hard to feel grounded. The choice to put these stressed characters in tiny carriages forces a natural tension that jumps right off the screen.

You really have to listen to the solo piano soundtrack to understand the heartbeat of this movie. My ears constantly catch the beautiful classical pieces composed by Dario Marianelli right before a major emotional shift happens. The editing moves at a very fast pace to match the rapid fire arguments between Elizabeth and her stubborn mother. We hear the loud rustle of heavy fabric and the crunch of boots on gravel constantly interrupting quiet countryside walks. The sudden absolute silence when Mr Darcy finally flexes his hand after touching Elizabeth actually makes the physical attraction feel terrifyingly real.
